Genetic Counseling

You can learn more about genetic conditions and their potential impact on you or your family through genetic counseling. A genetic counselor or other healthcare provider will collect your personal and family health history. The genetic counselor will work with you or your family members to better understand the clinical genetics of any medical conditions.

Most couples who are pregnant or trying to conceive do not require genetic counseling. However, it is recommended for couples with one or more of the following risk factors:

  • Having near relatives with hereditary diseases
  • Parents of a child already affected by a hereditary disease
  • Pregnant women over the age of 34 or those with abnormal amniocentesis or prenatal screening results
  • Abnormal outcomes of standard prenatal testing
  • Genetic counseling can provide valuable insights for individuals or families at risk for genetic conditions.
